Suggest PCV Vaccination For Infant
PCV-13 is more preferrable compared to PCV-10 but cost is a limiter
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.
PCV stands for Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine. It is given to protect a child from the diseases caused by a bacteria called Streptococcus pneumoniae. Earlier PCV-7 has been replaced by PCV-10 and PCV-13. PCV-13 protects against 13 of 91 serotypes of S.pneumoniae while for PCV-10 and PCV-7 it is 10 and 7 respectively. The cost of PCV-13 is Rs.3800 per dose whereas that for PCV-10 is Rs.2200 per dose (cost not including administration charges). There can be some variation in the cost depending on the source of procurement of the vaccine. Three primary doses followed by one booster at 15 months of age, need to be given to achieve the immunity. PCV is included in the national immunization schedule for many countries but not in XXXXXXX where it is an optional vaccine. So, it is upon you to decide whether you want your baby to get this vaccine. Many doctors recommend giving this vaccine but the cost is a limiter. So, if you can afford, it is definitely preferrable to go for it. In that case, PCV-13 would be obviously a better choice than PCV-10 if you can afford.
Hope that helps.
