Suggest Alternative Treatment For Hyperthyroidism

default
Posted on Fri, 2 Dec 2016
Question: doctor says My thyroid is over active, I do not like to take pills, what is your idea on this. He said he can give me a capsule as an alternative, lower dosed, and see if that could lower my reading to normal. Would this encourage cancer later on.? or am I better off with taking the thyroid pills everyday, for rest of my life. I am forgetful even taking only calcium pills, vit. E. That is only pills I am taking. I am 85 years old.

Brief Answer:
The alternative of treatments of overactive thyroid.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I read carefully your report and understood the problem.
The treatment of overactive thyroid should be with pills for some months, until the hormonal level reaches the normal values.
After the normalization of the hormonal level three alternatives of treatment are available:
-Radioiodine treatment; you take a capsule that contains radioactive iodine and it will destroy the thyroid gland for a period of 6 months, the disadvantage of it is a probable permanent under active thyroid that should be treated longlife. There is no risk of cancer with radioiodine treatment.
-Surgical intervention, (not much suggested, due to side effects that may have; low calcium level, laringeal nerve damage, permanent underactive thyroid ect)
-Treatment with tablets and a control of hormonal level every 3 months.
The choice depends on you after have explained the advantages and disadvantages of each alternative.
Do not hesitate to ask if you have still any question.

Kind regards,
Dr.Mirjeta Guni
