Suggest An Alternative Drug To Solatol For Atrial Fibrillation While Having A History Of Iodine Sensitivity

Question: I have A-fib and am taking Solatol twice a day. Due to recurrent bouts of a-fib my physician is suggesting my rx be changed to amiodarone. I have a history of iodine sensitivity. Could there be a different drug to use? To this day I remember the adverse affect from the contrast dye with a kidney scan.

Is this process in compliance with HIPPA?

Brief answer:
Different drugs could be Flecainide or propafenone

Detailed answer:

Hello,

Firstly, sensitivity of iv iodine formulations may occur without being sensitive to oral Amiodarone. So may not get sensitivity to oral Amiodarone.

However, alternatives are flecainide or propafenone, which can be taken on daily or sos basis. Another, strategy is rate control strategy, where you remain in A fib but rate is controlled with beta blockers and on blood thinners, which is also a good option and used in many patients. This prevents the side effects of antiarrhythmic.

So you can discuss these options with your doctor.

Although, I cant be sure about it, but patient has right to choose between the medicines and allergy to intravenous formulation is also a medical ground to go for other medicines. Also, flecainide, propafenone are commonly used medicines, so i think it should come under the act.

Hope this helps you and get back if you have any doubts.
