I read your concern and I understand .
Papaya enzyme is not recommended to be used as an alternative treatment in reflux dissease .
Yes, have been reported some long terms side effect in small cases .
Here are some ideas that may help:
-I would recommend to use Prilosec only when you start to have symptoms for maximum 8 weeks and after that stop .Start again when you have symptoms that you can not controll with a good diet.
-Try to take antihistamine drug some times instead of PPi (prilosec)
-A good alternative besides the medication is lifestyle changes :
-Avoid spicey food , fried food , caffeine , alcohol, smoking ( if you smoke )
-Eat small meals ,several times during a day.
-If you are overweight loose weight.
-Do at least 30min /walk a day.
-Eat dinner at least 2 hours before bad time.
