Suggest An Alternative To Benazepril For Hypertension
Question: i have taken medication for hypertension since 1998.Starting with lotrel 5-10 moving to amlodopine benazepril blend and changing two years ago to benazepril and amlodopine separately due to cost reasons. Recently I developed a cough which the doctor tied to the benazepril and told me to stop taking it. I went 3 weeks without it but my bp rose and the doctor told me I could take it again. The cough came back almost immediately. I have a call in to the doctor but I am wondering about substitutes for benazepril
Brief Answer:

Detailed Answer:
Dear Sir,
Thank you for posting your query on HCM.
Well looking into your problem I would like to tell you that benazepril is an ACE inhibitor and cough is a known side effect of this class of drugs and thus needs to be stopped most of the times . There can be lot of alternatives like he can increase the dose of amlodepine that you are taking , if not feasible then other class of drugs like diuretics , beta blockers can be added considering all the morbidities associated .
That decision has to be taken by your treating doctor . He can also use use angiotensin receptor blockers , they are also equally efficacious .
Take care.
Dr. Shruti
