Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for posting your query.

If you need protection for just one week, you can use barrier methods of contraception.

This is because hormone contraception is to be initiated at the onset of a period and effective protection is possible only after a couple of cycles.

Another option is to get an IUD if that is feasible. This can provide immediate protection.

Emergency contraceptive pill can be used only one or two times a year as it leads to hormone imbalances.

Hope your query has been clarified. Please feel free to contact for further information. I will be happy to help.

Hi Doctor

Thank you for your response.

In case of emergency contraceptive pill, should i take it before or after sex ? How effective is it in preventing pregnancy ? Is there any after effects for it (will i get fat by taking the pill ?)

Can you recommend any good emergency contraceptive pill for me to use along with the dosage ?

Brief Answer:
Emergency pill is taken soon after an intercourse.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing back.

If you are regular with your cycles and are in the safe period, you are naturally protected. Please remember that ovulation occurs two weeks prior to the onset of the next period and this is the fertile period when conception can occur.

Emergency pill is taken soon after an intercourse. It is 98-99% effective if done so. However, the high hormone content in the pill creates hormone imbalances and leads to withdrawal bleeding and can also delay your next natural cycle by a week or two.

Plan B one step is commonly used by the majority. It is a single dose pill to be taken within 72 hours of intercourse.

Hope this helps. Please get back if you need anything else.

regards,
Shanti.V.

Brief Answer:
Plan B One-Step

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for writing again.

The name of the pill is Plan B One-Step. This is the trade name as available in the market. I do not recommend hormones without a proper clinical evaluation. Please go through the literature and make sure you understand the side effects.

Hope this helps. Take care.
