Suggest Confirmatory Tests To Diagnose Sleep Apnea

default
Posted on Wed, 16 Sep 2015
Question: I just had a sleep study and the results came back with a diagnosis of sleep apnea. The diagnosis was based on the fact that I had 6 breathing problems per hour. I understand (from reading on the web) that 5 or less is not really considered a problem. So seems like this is rather borderline, no? I want to meet with my PA to discus more specific results. What measurements should I ask for? -XXXXX

Brief Answer:
Titration sleep study with CPAP is advisable in your case.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on Health Care Magic.
I can understand your concern.
If you are having AHI (apnea hypopnea index) more than 5 than you are having mild OSA.
And treatment with weight reduction, dieting and CPAP machine are needed.
CPAP is advised after titration study.
In this study, repeat sleep study is done with CPAP machine. And pressure is set at that level where your AHI is less than 5.
So sleep study with titration is needed for treatment.
So get done this test.

I am 5'8" and weigh 183 (I have gained about 15 pounds in the last 15-20 years. My only symptom was "I feel tired during the day, even after a good night's sleep." But my wife says I sometimes snore, so I did the study at her request.

Brief Answer:
Better to get done repeat sleep study with titration by CPAP machine.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your follow up question on Health Care Magic.
I can understand your concern.
You are having obesity and your symptoms are suggestive of OSA. So you should definitely start treatment for OSA.
And weight reduction is the first step in it.
CPAP therapy is also advisable. And for this you need to get done titration study. In this sleep study I'd done with CPAP machine on.
So you should definitely start weight loss and get done repeat sleep study with titration by CPAP.
Hope I have solved your query.
