Posted on Thu, 19 Jan 2017
Question: I am recently married and wants to take contraceptive pills. The pills I bought on doctor advice contains 21 pills.(Yasmin)
Questions:
1. After taking 21 pills from start of her periods, how long should she wait to re-take the pills.
Should she wait exactly for 7 days? Or she should wait again for her periods to come before starting pills.
2. Can we have unprotected sex after she has taken 21 pills, i.e. during the time she is not taking pills.
3. Is there any difference in starting taking pills in the starting of the periods, compared to stating taking pills after periods are over. Any side effects between these two ways starting pills,

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for your query to HCM.

I have read your questions and I will try to answer all questions you have done.

1.She should wait for breakthrough periods to start to re take the first pill of other month.
If her periods will delay or missed than she should take the first pill after she will wait 7 days for her periods, but she should be secure that she isn't pregnant.
All the times she will have delay periods she should take pregnancy test at home.

2.You can have unprotected intercourse all days ,if she will start taking the pill on day one of her periods .
She is protected and during the time she is not taking the pill, because this time should be the time that she will have periods.
3.If she will take the pill in the starting periods she will be protected ,but if she will start in other days you should use other method of protection for the other 7 days .
Better is to start on the day one of her cycle .
Side effects haven't relation with the start of pill.

Hope I'm helpful .

Regards

Thanks Dr. for the answers. I need little more clarity with Answer no. 1:
"1.She should wait for breakthrough periods to start to re take the first pill of other month.
If her periods will delay or missed than she should take the first pill after she will wait 7 days for her periods, but she should be secure that she isn't pregnant."

Question:
1. If she is taking pills from first day of her periods, then:
1.1 Once 21 pills are over, then should she voluntary wait for 7 days before taking the pills again? or She should wait for her periods to arrive again?

1.2 When you say "She should wait for breakthrough periods to start", does this means that next cycle of pills are taken only one next month periods starts?

1.3 Once 21 pills are over, is she expected to have periods again? In next 7 days? Does this alter period cycle?

1.4 After taking 21 pills, if she do not get her periods in next seven days, then when she should start taking the pills again?

2. How long she (months/years) she can be on birth controls pills continuously?
She is 28, so how long can we think this as a best contraceptive method.
Does prolong use of pills ( example - N no. of years) can cause any side effects that we should be aware of?

Apologies if I have asked repetitive questions. But I hope you understand the importance of having clarity on such matters. I appreciate your patience with my all questions. Looking forward. Thanks

Hi again!

1.She should start the next package of XXXXXXX on the day one of the next periods or on the day that she will see vaginal blood.
If she will have delay periods or she will not have periods than she should wait 7 days and than she should start the next package of XXXXXXX .
2.Serious side effects from the use of birth control method usually appear after a period of time of five years ,but it vary from family health history and her body.
