Suggest Dosage Of Valtrex
Question: A patch of Blisters on my husbands stomach (to the left of his navel) just showed up today...patch is about 4 inches in diameter, then he has a (2" in diameter) smaller patch on his left lower back about where his kidneys would be. I'm thinking of starting him on 1 GM of Valtrex. I've taken it for years for flare ups of Herpes zoster on my face. Should I do a loading dose tonight of 1GM and then another 1GM in the morning and evening tomorrow and Sunday til we can see the Dr. on Monday? He is 83...takes Balsalazide 750mg. for colitis and Metoprolol25 mg. BID for mild elevated BP. 140/86 was last check. No allergies.
Brief Answer:
dose reduction of valtrex.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for writing to healthcare magic.I can understand your concern.
Description of blisters by you probably point towards herpes zoster.
Now a days dermatologists tend to prefer valacyclovir(valtrex). However,as your husbands age is 83, dose reduction is advisable to avoid side effects. Dosage of 500 mg of valtrex 3 times daily for 7 days will be sufficient.
In any case do not try to rupture blisters.Application of calamine lotion will also help to reduce burning sensation.
I hope this will help you.In case of any concern I will be happy to help you.
Thanks.Take care.
