Answered by Dr. Vivek Chail (27 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
The dose of 2.5 ml Xyzal once daily is right for her

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. Xyzal contains levocetirizine and is an antihistamine which reduces the symptoms of cold and allergy.

2. The recommended dose of Xyzal in children 6 months to 5 years of age is 1.25 mg (1/2 teaspoon oral solution) which is 2.5 ml once daily in the evening. Since your child is 2 years of age therefore giving 2.5 ml is recommended.

3. Giving 5 ml will be twice the dose. Please give your child 2.5 ml only once in the evening.

4. Protect your child from dusty environment.

5. If there is no relief after giving Xyzal then please consult an allergist.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Regards,
Dr.Vivek

Thank you very much. I'll make a call to her pediatrician tomorrow. She prescribed 5ml but then a friend mentioned it was higher than her daughters dose. I did some research online and thought it was too high. I already gave her the 5ml dose tonight. Are there any side effects I shouldbe concerned with?

Brief Answer:
Your child is completely safe even if given 5 ml tonight

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing back with an update.

1. The dose of 5 ml is for children between ages 6 to 11 years.

2. Giving 5 ml instead of 2.5 ml once will not cause any side effect. This medicine has a wide range of toxicity and is safe if accidentally given twice the dose on a single occasion.

Clinical trials have included giving twice recommended doses in older children with no significant side effects as found in research studies.

3. Your child is safe and there is no need to worry. However, please make a call and have a talk with the pediatrician tomorrow.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Regards,
Dr.Vivek
