Suggest Food Restrictions For A Person Suffering From Hemochromatosis

Question: My husband is 67. He is 6'4" and weighs 185lbs. He has Hemochromotosis. He has a small mass in his kidney and a stone. He is very tired and 3 doctors have told him that he is anemic. It sounds like I don't feed him. He was in professional baseball since he was 17. He just came back from the doctor, and he is hooked up to several wires that report back to the cardiologist.

I would like to know what kind of diet I should give him. He, of course, has blood taken once a month.

What can I feed him to make him better?

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you for asking!
I read your query and understood your concerns.

Normally patients with hemochromatosis has iron overload and high blood feritinemia. The best way to treat iron overload is by frequent blood taking.

However sometimes frequent blood taking may be responsible for lower feritinemia (blood iron concentration) causing anemia

Your husband anemia isn't caused by poor digestion. Before giving you a more specific diet I would like to have a look of his test results. Can you please upload the results for me?

Meantime I would like to suggest as follows:
- Stop consuming alcohol
- Use vegetables and fresh fruits
- Avoid red meat and raw fish
- Use white meat
- Add magnesium and calcium supplements

I'm waiting for the requested data!
Wish you and your family health!
