Brief Answer:
Details below.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
1. The effect of epidural anaesthesia remains for 5-6 hours and it provides a very good analgesia during the first 3-4 hours. The surgery of hip replacement takes 1-1 1/2 hours only. Effect of anaesthesia does not wear off during the surgery.
2. An anaesthetist is present during the surgery and looks after the patient carefully for any deep pain perception which can be elicited even during sedation.
3. After the operation pain specialists or anaesthetist comes to examine you frequently and ensures that you are pain free with the help of pain killers or epidural analgesia.
4. After the surgery, the pain due to surgery subsides in a week. The pain due to muscular reasons can subside in next few weeks.
Hope my answer is helpful.
