With diabetes a thoughtful intake of protein is as important as the management of calorie. While it is a good thing that you plan to take vegetarian protein, I would advise you to make sure to include a variety of plant protein sources in the daily diet.
Pulses, legumes, lentil and Dairy are the major protein sources for vegetarians. Low fat milk and its products like low fat paneer and curd should be taken regularly. Nuts like almond, cashew and walnuts are also good protein sources, but the intake should be limited. You may include presoaked almonds and walnuts in daily diet but keep it to maximum 3 -4 almonds and 1 walnut.
While milk paneer can be safely consumed 2-3 times in a week, it’s alternative, Tofu (Soy Paneer) should also be included. Tofu is the pure plant food and is quite rich in protein. Mushroom, whole grains and other foods like pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds and watermelon seeds supply good quality protein. You need not give up the animal protein completely, consider taking Egg white, as a part of curries of sandwiches.
Protein supplements are also suggested, if you experience weight loss and weakness. There are special brands and compositions for people with diabetes. You may discuss with your doctor and select the supplement that suits your requirements. Some common supplements are D- Protein, Diabetic resource, Glucerna SR and Fresubin DM.
