Suggest Medical Tests To Rule Out Thyroid

Question: I have been told that I have hypothyroidism and my legs swel, get heavy and ache that I cant stand or walk. I have been on all kinds of thyroid meds and no help. Right now the endo has my TSH level so off that it is making it worse. But I have had the same problem when levels were ok. I heard about a ADH or water load test but cant get any help from dr. This has been going on for over 10 yr and I have been to 40 dr and no answers. I feel it has something to do with the thyroid med but who will listen to me. any ideas

Sorry to note your symptoms. If your thyroid lab test results are normal then it is extremely unlikely that your symptoms are due to the thyroid condition. However there are rare thyroid problems such as secondary hypothyroidism and thyroid hormone resistance which require further testing to diagnose accurately. The tests you mention are not the ones that are performed in these situations. There are others such as prolactin and cortisol , and sometimes an MRI scan of the pituitary is done

When I see someone like you in my practice, I typically order the following blood tests in addition to a detailed physical examination:

CBC (Complete Blood Count, also known as Hemogram; includes Hemoglobin, WBC and Platelet counts)
Electrolytes (Sodium and Potassium in particular)
HbA1c (Glycosylated Hemoglobin = your 3 month glucose average)
Liver function tests (SGOT , SGPT, Albumin, Bilirubin, Alkaline Phosphatase)
Kidney function tests (BUN, Creatinine)
TSH
Free T4
Total T4
Total T3
T3 resin uptake
25 hydroxy Vitamin D
Prolactin
8 am cortisol
FSH
LH
