Brief Answer:
Cranberry, and urinary pain relievers such as AZO.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX

I am sorry you are having a UTI.

First a precaution: If you have fever, nausea, and/or flank pain (aching in the kidney area in your back near your waist) and just feel overall sick, then you may have a kidney infection in which case you should not treat at home but instead go in to be seen and take an antibiotic. Upper UTIs are more serious and must be treated as such.

But if your symptoms are limited to the bladder (burning, pain, urinary frequency) then you can try to treat it at home. The mainstay of treating at home is:
1. Force fluids so that you keep urinating a lot.
2. Drink much cranberry juice or take cranberry capsules. Cranberry has been shown to have considerable effect on bacterial colonization. More on cranberry juice below.
3. Take phenazopyridine for the pain (AZO).

About drinking lots of cranberry juice: The standard stuff, such as Ocean Spray Cranberry juice, is loaded with sugar. So if you drink a lot of it you are getting more sugar than is healthy for your body. If you can find it, I'd suggest getting Cranberry concentrate which has only cranberry in it. Mix this with water and if you want to cut it a bit you can mix in a little unsweetened apple juice. This is tart, but you will be getting more of the effective cranberry and less sugar.

If your symptoms get worse instead of better, then do go in to a doctor or clinic and give a urine specimen which can be sent for culture and identification for if you need an antibiotic. But many times uncomplicated lower UTIs can be treated at home without antibiotics.

Good luck and please let me know if I can provide further information or clarification.
