Question: I have been bipolar for about 20 years. Lately I have been hearing voices and having dreams about sexual abuse in my past. Can you please help me know what is happening to me?

Detailed Answer:
Thanks very much for your question. I'm happy to help.

What you are describing primarily are auditory hallucinations in the setting of known bipolar illness. This is most likely associated with a mood episode, such as a depressive or manic episode. The appropriate way to treat this is twofold: increase the dose of the mood stabilizer, and add an atypical neuroleptic. Your doctor increased your Epival which is a good start. I would also add or increase the dose of a neuroleptic such as risperidone or olanzapine.

As for the dreams about sexual abuse, there is no treatment for disturbing dreams, but I would recommend attending weekly psychotherapy to discuss how these make you feel, in the hopes of improving your mood.

I hope this was of help to you.

Thank you very much for your advice. I will call my psychiatrist and ask for resperidone which I've taken before.
I am taking 500 mg of L-Theanine, 600 mg of Ashwaganda and 2 1.800 Numovil daily. Are any of these harmful?
