Suggest Medication For Chronic Migraine

Question: My mother is suffering from migraine since 16 yrs. She used to take medicine called Migranil from last 8-9 yrs. But now this medicine is not available and other medicines like Dolo 650Mg, Topirate 50mg and Migranil EC are not effective as the headache remains to be severe. Please suggest.

Hello,
I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
Migraine treatment depends upon number of episodes in a month.
In chronic migraine prophylaxis treatment is required along with prevention.
She should take timely meals especially breakfast and lunch. Avoid fasting, excessive tea or coffee and chocolates.
Take timely and sound sleep.
Prophylaxis is required if episodes leads to headache more than 10-15 days in a month. Drugs like propranolol, Topiramate, Valproate, amitryptiline or Flunarizine can be used.
Pain killers are to be used intermittently and regular use should be avoided as it can lead to medication overuse headache.
Naproxen can be used for pain relief.
How many episodes she have in a month?
Follow instructions and visit to a neurologist for prescription.
