Brief Answer:
Wellbutrin could be a better option

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for using Healthcaremagic.

Wellbutrin is considered the drug of choice for atypical depression. Lexapro although effective but causes more sedation which compounds the situation in atypical depression.

I hope this answers your question.

taking effexor now. is that less effective than welbutrim. Was taking both but i was complaning about severe dry mouth so psychiatrist dropped it. I still have severe dry mouth. I am also taking 9 other medications.

would you suggest a trial of welbutim alone?

Brief Answer:
Both are equally effective in depression

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for reverting back to me.

It is difficult to claim superiority for any antidepressant but as said above wellbutrin is drug of choice for atypical depression as it takes care of increased sleepiness, laden paralysis and increased appetite which are hallmark of atypical depression while effexor generally increases the problem in majority.

Considering the fact wellbutrin should be given a fair trial provided the diagnosis of atypical depression is correct.

Regarding dry mouth it is not a typical side effect of wellbutrin and there is need to search for alternative causes for dry mouth before attributing it to wellbutrin.

I hope this clarifies.
Thanks and regards.

any recommendations for dry mouth

Brief Answer:
Frequent sipping of water

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for reverting back to me.

For dryness of mouth conservative approach is used which includes frequent sipping of water. In addition offending agent should be identified and stopped/reduced if possible. It is possible that some of the other drugs is causing dryness of mouth which includes effexor as it has anticholinergic side effects. I hope with discontinuation of effexor there will be marked improvement in dryness of mouth.

I hope this assists you further.
Thanks and regards.
