Suggest Medication For Severe Cough And Chest Infection During Pregnancy
Question: I am 22weeks pregnant suffering from severe cough, chest infection. The physician gave me a shot of gentamicin antibiotic,I have not taken anymore medicine nor any more dose of gentamicin but my obstetrician said I should not have taken it. Kindly advice.
Brief Answer:
Should have been avoided.
Detailed Answer:
Welcome To HCM. I am Dr Anshul Varshney. I understand your concern.
Yes, Gentamycin shouod ideally be avoided in pregnancy.
Since you have taken a single shot of it , I suppose it should not harm your baby because you are carrying into 22 weeks of pregnancy and by this time most of the organs have developed.
A single dose is usually not harmful however you should ahead with Level 2 Ultrasound as scheduled.
In case you have persisting cough and the associated symptoms let me know I would help you with the safe medicines.
I hope it helps you.
If you have any further query, please ask me.
Stay Healthy.

Thank you Doctor! I have already had level 2 ultrasound at 20 weeks. I do have cough and mild breathing problem associated with that.
Brief Answer:
Get examined.
Detailed Answer:
Hi. The safe options for you would be Anti Allergic drugs like Avil. Do steam inhalation and warm saline gargles.
You may take Honituss cough syrup for the same.
You would require antibiotics in case you develop fever.
Your doctor would examine your chest for any evidence of congestion. If the congestion is severe causing breathlessness then you would require antibiotics and nebulization.
Share my opinion with your doctor.
I hope it helps.
