Question: I had absolutely dry cough - sore throat - slight fever for 1.5 days due to possibly change in temperature in XXXXXXX I tool 1 tablet Allegra 120 mg for 3 days and one paracetamol and now i am fine but coughing is still there for which I am using Honitus cough syrup 1 teaspoon thrice a day as suggested by a doctor. In the meantime my wife and mother both have similar problems - fever is not there but coughing is still there. They did not take Allegra but took cough syrup only. What should we do the get rid of coughing which is no more dry.

Brief Answer:
Home measures and antitussive cough formula.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

The complaints may be due to acute bronchitis. Viral infection is usually the cause in such cases. The current treatment you are on are in most cases sufficient. However if cough is severe and troublesome, you will be benefitted by nebulisation.

Alternatively you may use syp tusq which is a cough suppressant 1 tsp thrice a day instead of the herbal cough formula (Honitus cough syrup).

Viral infection is a self resolving condition. However cough secondary to acute bronchitis may sometimes last for few weeks. Therefore I also suggest you include home measures such as warm ginger tea and frequent steam inhalation for added benefits.

That being said, I will insist you see a doctor if fever persists.

Hope I am clear. Let me know if you need clarifications.

Regards

Dear Doctor
Coughing is not severe - its very mild and it is on downtrend today being 5th day when the issue started. Will try the new syp tusq and also ginger tea / steam inhalation. Whole night I could sleep without coughing.

I have no fever for last 2-3 days - only for 1.5 days I had fever and took only one paracetamol once.

Brief Answer:
You are on course of recovery..

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

You seem to be on the course towards recovery. Cough settles down gradually in such cases. You can continue syp tusq till you feel better.

It's good you don't have fever. Paracetamol can be used only if required.

In this instant, I will suggest you take some multivitamin pills. They aid in recovery process. Zincovit is my choice. One pill a day for a week or two should suffice.

Hope this helped. Wish you get better soon.

Regards
