I told him about my addiction to Alcohol and that I was not able to stop drinking on daily basis. He prescribed me Ativan 1 mg. Is this drug safe? Does it have any negative impact on the liver? please advice. Do you receomment any medicine to bring down my SGPT, SGOT and GGPT levels?

Brief Answer:
The medicine ativan is safe but causes side effect with alcohol

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. Ativan contains (lorazepam) and if taken with alcohol then there is increased tendency to have side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, and difficulty concentrating in activities requiring alertness.

2. Ativan is a medicine given to reduce anxiety and your doctor thinks that you are unable to stop daily drinking because of anxiety.

3. This will not have any impact on liver but if there is serious liver problem then this medicine should not be given.

4. Earlier also you have been given Liv 52 but it will work only if you stop alcohol. The same medicine might be recommended again to reduce SGPT, SGOT and GGPT level.

5. Please stop daily drinking to avoid serious liver problem. If you continue daily drinking then there is a chance of developing cirrhosis and even liver cancer over next 5 years or more.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Hii! thanks a lot Doctor. Couple of questions more. Will having Ativan increase levels of SGPT and SGOT? had read it somewhere on the net so confirming. I have stopped drinking since few days now. I have been taking S-Numlo 5mg for BP. Ativan won't increase BP, right? and Rosave 20mg for Cholesterol. Cholesterol was high when tests were done. LDL was 260. and Febumac 40 for uric acid. I hope ativan won't interfere with these medicines?

Brief Answer:
Taking ativan is safe in your case

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
Thanks for writing back with an update.

1. Good to know you have controlled alcohol drinking and I wish you continue it and stay that way.

2. Ativan is less likely to increase SGPT and SGOT. The side effect is seen in less than 1 percent of people taking it. Ativan will not increase abnormal blood pressure.

3. There is no interaction of ativan with S-Numlo 5mg, Rosave 20mg and Febumac 40. It will not interfere with these medicines.

Hope your query is answered.
