Brief Answer: Newer medication available without weight gain Detailed Answer: Hello and welcome to Healthcare Magic. Thanks for your query. You have mentioned that you have been diagnosed to have Bipolar II disorder and that you have been tried on psychiatric medication in the past but have experienced troublesome side effects such as weight gain. Now, unfortunately, the only way to treat Bipolar disorder is with mood stabilizer medication. But, like you mentioned many of the commonly used mood stabilizer medication like Lithium, Valproate, etc. can cause weight gain. However, nowadays, there are newer and effective mood stabilizers like Lamotrigine and Levitracetam which do not cause weight gain. So, I would advise you to ask your doctor about these newer medication. Wish you all the best. Regards, Dr. Jonas Sundarakumar Consultant Psychiatrist
