Question: Our daughter has a drinking problem and we want her to go to rehab. But the two that we've contacted will not take her while she on neurontin. She's taking it for foot pain. Is there some other drug that might help that will not be a mind altering drug? Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Pregabaline or duloxetine can be used

Detailed Answer:
HI
Thanks for using healthcare magic. I, Dr Abhishek Kapoor, would you help in this query.

In my opinion, the foot pain is most likely from chemotherapy. Nevertheless it is a good move to get her deaddicted.

If they don't take her while on gapapentin (neurontin), pregabalin (lyrica) is another drug that might be used for pain. I am not sure what you meant by "mind altering drugs", however antidepressants like TCAs which includes imipramine, amitriptyline; SNRIs like duloxetine, venlafaxine, local lidocaine may also be used.

As the antidepressant group of drugs are not as effective as lyrica, I would suggest pregabalin as substitute. In case, they refuse for this drug also, than the next best in line is duloxetine. Rest, you can discuss with your physician.

In case, you need further help, you can ask.
