Question: Hi,
My son is 1.5 month old and have cold from last 10 days. Doctor prescribed Mucolite for 2 days, there was no relief then included anti-biotic Taxim-o. Should I use anti-biotic for 45 days old infant? Please suggest.

Brief Answer:
Antibiotics are safe to be used in children

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for posting on HealthCareMagic.

Most of the cold in children is caused due to certain viruses. Viral infections do not heal with antibiotics. But at times there is a superadded bacterial infection for which antibiotics are required. Before being able to comment on whether antibiotics are needed you need to get the blood tested for the counts and CRP. If the WBC counts and CRP are elevated, antibiotics need to be given. If the child is suffering from a bacterial infection, antibiotics are essential irrespective of whether the child is 1 day old or 45 day old.

Taxim-O is a very basic and safe antibiotic to be given to a child of this age. But I would strongly insist you to get the blood tested. Inform me of the reports and I would try to guide you further.
