Suggest Remedies For A Failed Gingival Graft
I have a friend who had a gum graft done and the gum graft failed (part of it was detached), the surgeon waited 3 weeks before repeating the graft - after taking the bandage off 8 days later, the graft failed (came detached). what would you recommend? this is going on 2 months. they need to get it fixed asap because they have events soon and they do not want to attend with a detached gum graft. can the part of the graft that is detached be removed? what other options are there to fix the gum graft?
Improper graft site selection, immunocompromised status, repeat grafting
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your query. I have gone through your query. As far as the failed graft is concerned, this can occur secondary to improper site selection or if there is no support from the neighbour structure to support the graft material. The other possible cause can be an immunocompromised state like diabetes which may increase the possibility of infection and result in graft failure.
Nothing to be panic, consult a good periodontist and get it evaluated. Mean while you need to get a radiograph like orthopantomograph done to check the amount of bone remaining to decide whether that area is fit for graft placement. If it is fit then we can place a graft and splint.
I hope I have answered your query. If you have any queries reply me back. Upload the images of the radiographs and the gums so that I can give you the exact treatment plan.
Take care.
Can it be reattached right away or can it the part that is detached be removed?
Repeat graft placement, upload the images
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your reply. Please upload the images of the detached graft so that I can tell you the exact treatment plan. If only part of the graft has come out then it can be treated by removing only detached portion because after 2 months the graft will not be taken up by the body. If the graft has detached or failed involving a wide area then it has to be repeated. I hope I have answered your query. Take care
