Question: Hi there!

As i recover from multiple anxiety disorders something occurs to me that id like to ask about.

Recently, i got the feeling that i was about to die or that something horrible was about to happen and i got spaced out and frozen. It came after i felt a surge of energy in my head/neck. I recognize that that must be classic anxiety so i was able to manage the feeling though it lasted hours.

I noticed that any time i would get excited or active during that time, it woukd strangely mske the feeling worse after an initial good feeling.

So i guess.. is all of this just patterns that my brain has learned. Energy = fear so i automatically activate the wrong circuits?

Or is it that my anygdala is overly sensitive so stimulation will still make it active until it eventually shrinks enough to be normal?

Brief Answer:
Its more like a conditioned response.

Detailed Answer:
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related doubts.

I don't think your amygdala is over sensitive. Most likely you have learned or I will say you got conditioned with the situation. In time of excitement your anxiety is getting triggered and this is due to learned response.

The psychopathology of anxiety or depression is not clearly understood. Psychological, genetic, neurotransmitters changes, neurocircuts changes etc factors work together in causing anxiety or depressive symptoms.

Thanks and Take care

Thats what it feels like. Makes sense.

Also, i get very overwhelmed rather quickly. It doesnt take much stimulation of excitement to brimg on dizziness and exhaustion. Im hoping that passes as i keep pushing through .

Brief Answer:
Behaviour therapy can help in treatment.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again

Yes the symptoms will go with time. Behavioural modifications, behaviour therapy coupled with relaxation exercises can help in improvement of symptoms. Relaxation exercise will help in reducing the anxiety in situations when you get excited.

Thanks.

Thanks! Ive been on 25mg of zoloft as well and during that time i have swen my symptoms get better... but not disappear... however, ive XXXXXXX done a ton of behavioral work to learn what the symptoms are and why i dont need to be afraid of them.

Do you think the zoloft has helped or is it the work ive done? Ive also gained weight on the drug so would like to begin to taper .

Brief Answer:
Zoloft 25 mg is a low dose.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again

Zoloft 25 mg is a very low dose and in my opinion combination of Zoloft and behavioural work both have helped you.

The dose of 25 mg usually is safe and Zoloft is safest of all SSRIs. I don't think this dose will cause much weight gain. Still if you want to reduce the dose then you can start taking half tablet for next two weeks and then can stop the drug abruptly. This will not cause any withdrawal.

Thanks

Thank you!

And do you agree that what causes the disorder is essentislly fear of strange stress symptoms? Like, i said... feeling overwhelmed... head pressure... tight chest... i think what causes the anxiety to loop is my fear of those symptoms never going away or getting worse, which paradoxically makes them worse. Right?

Brief Answer:
Anxiety is resulting in symptom which is making anxiety worse.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again

Yes a vicious cycle of fear then anxiety and then symptoms you have has formed and this is resulting in problems. Anxiety resulted in symptoms like pressure in head, tightness of chest etc which in turn resulted in anticipation and fear of symptoms which further deteriorate the anxiety. All these things are interrelated which is resulting in persistence of symptoms.

Thanks
