Suggest Remedies For Blisters And Oozing Skin After A Chemical Peel
Question: Hi there, I had IPL two days ago and the procedure burnt the skin on my chest - I'm am quite fair in complexion but have a lot of freckling and sun damage. There are brown burn marks the shape of the machine head and some areas have blistered to reveal pink tender skin. I've tried bepatham ointment but the areas keep oozing. I have since applied a "spray-on" bandage from the chemist which seems to have sealed the areas and relieved some pain. Should I be concerned about scarring? Thanks, XXXXXXX

I am Dr. Kakkar (dermatologist). I have read your questionn and I have also reviewed the Image.
This is a second degree burn (blistering and oozing). This must be quite painful. I suggest you to use a topical steroid cream e.g triamcinolone acetonide 0.1% cream Or mometasone furoate 0.1% cream, twice daily. Alternatively, it would even be appropriate to take a short course (a week) of Oral steroids i.e prednisolone. Steroids being antiinflammatory would take care of erythema, blistering and oozing. Use only steroids (oral and topical), nothing else! and stay away from sun. In addition I would also give you a week of Oral antibiotics as a prophylaxis to prevent secondary bacterial infection of blisters or raw skin.
This would resolve in about a week on oral and/ or topical steroids and should not scar, though there might be some temporary dyspigmentation.

Thanks for your response. I have some DermAid .5% hydrocortisone cream which I used recently for a rash. Could I use this?

I would suggest a potent steroid like mometasone furoate 0.1% or triamcinolone acetonide 0.1%. These are prescription steroids.
A week course of an oral steroids would be ideal in this case.
You can contact the laser center which did IPL. They normally give a topical steroid cream as some patients can have this kind of a side effect.
