Posted on Thu, 2 Jun 2016
Question: I recently suffered from two broken ribs and a collapsed lung February 14 of this year .
I appear to be suffering from swelling, hence the fact my stomach is bloated. It appears as if I was three months pregnant. How long will it take to regain normalcy?

Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Can you please describe the accident which has caused ribs injury? Was there abdomen involved as well? Have you had abdominal ultrasound or CT after this injury? Have you been treated with antibiotics recently? Do you have constipation? Have you changed your diet?

I`m looking forward to hearing from you.

Hello, thank you for treating me today…
It's quite possible that my abdomen also hit the staircase. I was walking up our circular staircase holding our dog and I missed a step and fell going up the stairs.
I was in pain, however I didn't think I had broken anything. We then went to bed, but 3 hours later, I woke up having difficulty breathing. We then went to the emergency room and I had a CT scan as well as x-rays. It turned out that two of my ribs had broken, and one of them hit my lung and that had taken 3 hours to collapse, hence tthe reason we didn't go to the emergency room right away.
To answer your question regarding the antibiotics… No, I have not had any antibiotics lately.
And no constipation, now that I am no longer taking the Norco pain medication I was taking for just about five or six days after I left the hospital.
Also, my diet is the same.
Do you think that it's because I'm swollen inside?

Brief Answer:
This might be an effect of injury.

Detailed Answer:
Yes, this might be due to swelling. Sometimes intestines do respond with slower work after an injury.
No need to take any painkillers right now. Try to start probiotic intake. It should help a little. And add some fiber to your diet.
If there will be no improvement in a week or so, please consult gastrologist.
