Question: 2 years ago, I was diagnosed with SEVERE Graves disease. The doctor gave me 10 millicuries of radioactive iodine. Now, I am currently being treated for hypothyroidism. I am on 1
0.175 mcg synthroideand 10 mg cytomel. After 2 years of thyroid hormone therapy, I continue to fight symptoms of Hypothyroidism... brain foggy, depression, no libido, Wright gain, fatigue. My doctor's tell me my blood work falls in the upper normal range. Why do I still feel symptoms of Hypothyroidism? Why can't I loose weight? I take doing class twice a weak, ballet class 1x a week, a d a ton of walking. (I live in NYC!) WHAT AM I MISSING?

Brief Answer:
Hypothyroidism

Detailed Answer:
Sorry to note your symptoms of hypothyroidism despite normal-looking laboratory test results.
I see you are engaging in healthy habits ie exercising adequately. I would like to believe you are eating healthy too.

When I see someone like you in my practice, I typically order the following blood tests in addition to a detailed physical examination:

CBC
Electrolytes
Calcium
HbA1c (Glycosylated Hemoglobin = your 3 month glucose average)
Liver function tests
Kidney function tests
TSH
Free T4
25 hydroxy Vitamin D

Of these you have already undergone tests for the thyroid condition ie TSH and Free T4. It appears you are at treatment goals as far as these lab tests are concerned.

The other tests listed above can help us explore other possible causes of your symptoms such as undiagnosed diabetes and vitamin D deficiency to name a couple examples.

Furthermore, I will advise you that most endocrinologists worldwide avoid cytomel like medications for the treatment of hypothyroidism. It is deemed unsafe. Synthroid alone in the right doses suffices.
