Question: MY son and I were fishing this afternoon and the boat bumped into a tree causing him to fall back into the boat. His back first made contact with the corner of a solid 2' high metal live well. He fell 2 - 3 feet and then hit his head. He has an abrasion 4/ - 5 inches in his left lower rib cage. He complained about the pain and reports that the injury site burns. My son is 50 years old and is a heavy man. We are within 25 miles of XXXXXXX Missouri near Truman reservoir. Advice requested. XXXX.

I am sorry to hear that your son had a fall this morning on the boat while fishing. It sounds like he has some abrasions and contusions. As long as he did not loss consciousness after his fall he does not need to be seen. For the abrasions clean the area with soap and water and cover with a bandage. Then daily wash and clean with soap and water and reapply the bandage till healed. If the area becomes red swollen with drainage he may have infection and need antibiotics. Also he should be up to date on his immunizations specifically tetanus. If he has not then he may want to get an update as soon as possible.

I hope I answered your question. Please contact us again if you have any additional quesitons

My son told me that he could feel something flopping at around inside his ribcage. He is nearly immobile.

Brief Answer:
Possible rib fracture

Detailed Answer:
Your son may have a rib fracture. There is no actual treatment for a rib fracture other than pain control. For the pain I would recommend he use tylenol. If he develops shortness of breath he will need to be seen immediately as he may have punctured a lung from the fractured rib.
