Suggest Remedies For Depression And OCD While On Olanzapine
Question: Sir , my son was prescribed Prodep 60mg per day and Olanzapine 10mg per day for depression and panic as he used to get images of cockroaches . He has been taking these medicines for last one year. There has been immense improvement in him . Now he is very busy in his job and is working and is able to focus on every thing normally . It is occasionally he gets images but now he is able to distract from it .
For how long he need to take these medicines as I am worried about the side effects ?

From the available description it appears to me that your son has suffered with obsessive compulsive disorder a kind of disorder which has overlapping symptoms with depression. Here the person gets intriguing images, impulses or thoughts of his own despite the resistance.
However I must acknowledge that I may be wrong as available piece of information is too limited to make a diagnosis.
Regarding the duration of treatment most of my patients need at least two years of treatment for complete control of OCD. Since he is still having those images I think we need to continue the treatment despite having tremendous improvement. This is because any residual symptoms can bring the full blown illness on discontinuation of medication.
I understand that there are side effects but the risk is more with medication discontinuation and we can not ignore this.
Regarding counselling I like to inform you that I offer counselling but online thing is very difficult to conduct as you may be in different time zones. The charges for one session are US$50 or INR 3000.

I may inform you that my son is in XXXXXXX now .You may tell me if it is possible for On-Line counselling and charges .
My question that these medicines lead to sexual dysfunction remains to be answered . Should we go ahead with marriage plans or we should postpone the same .
And what more can be done apart from medicines to speed the recovery because I think he should develop the confidence that these images are harmless in the first place and secondly cockroach in its real presence can do no harm to human beings . Any body can just kill it .
Moreover he needs to change his personality and become more outgoing , more expressive in his feelings and do his work with less or no anxiety .

Yes sexual side effects are reported with both olanzapine and prodep but fortunately not everybody gets side effects. There is less chance after six months of use as these side effects are more common during initial months.In addition the side effects are reversible on discontinuation of medication.
Regarding planning for marriage I think it is very specific question and should be answered by treating psychiatrist as I have little details about the patient.
