Suggest Remedies For Fatigue When Diagnosed With Breast Cancer

default
Posted on Wed, 1 Mar 2017
Question: I had an burst AVM after I gave birth to my only son; he was one year old at the time. I was put on Adderrall after about a year due to cognitive issues and fatigue. At the time, I worked full time and travelled every week.

Ten years later, I was diagnosed with early stage breast cancer which has not returned, but it was complicated at the time due to lack of clean margins and much else. After chemo, I stopped working, and recently both of my doctors dropped me because a state widow monitoring service informed them of each other. I felt I needed additional meds at the time. I have been off the mess for 8 months and still feel I am not functioning as well when on the medication. What should I do?

Consultation

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and thanks for your question.

Using more than one doctor to prescribe controlled substances makes it impossible for either doctor to treat you effectively, so they had to discontinue seeing you. It is possible you have a substance abuse issue with regard to Adderall. In any event, Adderall is not a good long-term medication for the treatment of cognitive issues and fatigue. A much safer medication would be an SNRI antidepressant such as venlafaxine, desvenlafaxine, or duloxetine. Further, any doctor will be willing to consider prescribing these as they are all non-addictive, unlike Adderall. I recommend seeking out treatment with one of these medications.
