Suggest Remedies For Fever And Cough In A Child

default
Posted on Mon, 1 Aug 2016
Question: My daughter who is 5.6years old has come down with fever (since yesterday, 11July) and bad cough (not dry)(since Saturday, 09July). This may have been triggered off because of some allergic reaction to the food color used in kurkure that she had on 09july.

Can I give her fluzet? If yes, how much? Or should I give her something else? Her weight should be around 24.5kgs.

Thanks,
doctor

Brief Answer:
Seems to be due to a viral infection.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on Healthcaremagic.

Children frequently suffer from viral infections and it is likely that your child has one of those. I do not think that it is due to 'allergic reaction on the food color used in kurkure'. (That does not mean that I encourage junk food like these.)

I would strongly oppose to giving Fluzet (Dextromethorphan). It is a cough suppressant and does more harm than good. Rather, you should use expectorants like Ambrodil (contains ambroxol). 5 ml twice or thrice a day should be right for her. Also give steam inhalation twice or thrice a day. Water in form of vapor would reach deep inside and would help in diluting the cough and would thus provide relief.

Give her paracetamol if she has fever. Also give tepid sponging.

Regards
