There are many causes of tremors and i am going to give a short explanation for some of them that are more common.

A very common cause is called "essential tremor"- this is genetic, which means it runs in family and the person experiences tremor while he is doing actions, like when he wants to have a coffe, the hand shakes and the cup seems like it is going to fall, etc. Small amonuts of alcohol might help reduce this kind of tremor but is not recommened due to addiction effects it has.

Another cause of tremors is if the patient has consumed a lot of alcohol in the past and this causes changes in the cerebellum (a part of the brain) that coordinates movements and causes tremor.

Parkinson is another cause of tremor. This happens also due to changes in some structures in the brain that help with coordication of movements the tremor here is worse while resting and improves a little when the patient wants to use that extremity.

Other brain problems like masses, hemorage, etc, are rare causes of tremor but are important to be ruled out especially if the doctor does a physical examinaiton and finds other findings that lead toward possible neurological causes of the tremor.

Some medications might cause tremor and is very important that the patient talks with his doctor on the medicaitons he uses and how much is the chance that the tremor might be due to side effects of medications.

I would strongly recommend though that he does the followup visit as asked by his doctor as this will give the doctor a lot on information on what is going on and how to furhter help with his symptoms.
