Suggest Remedies For Itchy Scalp

Question: Dear Dr.

Recently some area of my scalp have been very itchy, even after washing my hair.
I do wash my hair twice a day, morning and night.
Also, I noticed some hair lose.
I searched the internet, and tried some test, when I taunted my hair in bunch in different areas of my head, I did find one or two hair came off.
I then search more and said could be a fungus infect.
I am not sure!
I have clotrimazole cream canesten at home(1%), not sure is it safe to put on my itchy area of my scalp?

Hello and thanks for your query here at HCM.

I have read your question and understand your concerns.

Itchy skin on scalp could be caused by several conditions that include seborrheic dermatitis, fungal infection (tinea capitis), allergic reaction and rarely dermatological conditions such psoriasis.

You should use first over the counter shampoos such those containing ketoconazole (Nizoral for example).

If itchy sensation persists after few days even with antifungal shampoo use, there is need to be evaluated by a Dermatologist before starting any treatment.

If there is improvement after antifungal shampoo use, it means that fungal infection is most likely the cause of your symptoms and in this case use of clotrimazole cream locally is a good alternative to treat it.
