Brief Answer:
Low sodium

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

You are concerned about low sodium. This is usually caused by a person taking diuretics or water pills. The most offending agent is hydrochlorothiazide or HCTZ for short. This used for blood pressure control and sometimes it causes a large amount of sodium to be excreted from the kidneys causing low sodium. The treatment is stop the HCTZ.

The second cause is inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone. This is seen after head trauma and the brain releases a hormone that causes excess sodium to be excreted again. This is treated with limiting free water intake to 1 liter a day. This can reverse itself over a few weeks.

A third cause is over drinking water./ This does not happen too often but usually in those people with psychiatric illnesses may over drink water and cause over hydration and low sodium due to dilution. The treatment is reduce water intake.
