Question: Hello Doctor,
My 2 year old son has developed cough with barking sound so his pediatrician suggested levolin 1 mg syrup 3 times a day for 5 days and montair LC kid syrup once a day for a week though it's been almost 3 days of giving him the above medications there is no improvement. Also he has suggested to start with novamox 250/5 in case the cough is for more than a week and with fever but my son has no fever. Please suggest what to do as I'm really worried doctor.

Brief Answer:
Azithromycin antibiotic is a better choice in cough without fever

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for asking on this platform

Levolin contains levosalbutamol a bronchodilator which prevents airways spasm and montair LC is an anti allergic.
Both the medications are good for cough and the prescribed dosage are also appropriate for age.
Cough without fever is more likely to be caused by some atypical organism while cough with fever is due to some other organism.
In cough with fever Novamox is a good choice while in cough without fever Azithromycin is better.
Cough may persist for 7-10 days but I won't get overly worried if child is otherwise active, accepting feeds well and there is no breathing difficulty.
I would like to continue with the Levolin and montair LC along with Azithromycin (after discussion with your pediatrician) and suggest you to watch for any worsening in cough or fast breathing;if you notice any please consult your pediatrician immediately.

I hope this helps.
Please let me know if you have any queries.

Hello doctor,
As asked above and giving medications my son still has slite cough and it's only after he wakes up from his sleep but the cough still has barking sound. I have stopped giving him all the medications from today as he suddenly developed loose motions in the morning which is also stopped as of now. I didn't give him any antibiotics mentioned above. Is it safe to stop all the medications now or should I continue for few more days or should I start with any antibiotics? I'm really confused please suggest.
Thank you

Brief Answer:
Continue levolin and montair for 3-5 more days

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Cough may take 7-12 days to subside completely.During recovery morning cough persists longer.
As cough is improving I don't think antibiotic is needed anymore . No specific treatment is needed for loose stool if it has improved. Continue giving levolin and montair for few more days and I hope he will be alright within 3-5 days.

Regards
