Question: Some years ago I was unable to walk correctly and was using a walker. At that time my wife and I were both 75 years old. While helping me get out of the recliner chair I fell on her. She landed on her buttocks. Since the time she has had minor pain in her right buttock. Since then she feels that it has gotten worse. She uses pain patches but has ceased to help much. Can you advise as to what is causing this persistent pain. She is now 77 years old and fairly healthy. Any advice please. Thank you in advance.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXX,

Thank you for trusting HCM with your question; I will make my best to inform you regarding your question.

It is highly likely that your wife has sustained an injury to her pelvis, maybe sacral, lumbar vertebral column. At older age bones become osteoporotic, weaker and prone to fractures and micro fractures. Also, At older age intervertebral discs degenerate and are more prone for prolapse.

Previous possibilities can lead to nerve pressure, which manifest as numbness or pain that usually radiates to the leg, but can also be localized to one area.

To be able to tell you the exact reason for the persistent pain since the injury, your wife has to refer to a neurologist, who will be able to examine your wife, order x-rays, and MRIs to help in diagnosis. In certain cases surgical intervention might be needed and the neurologist can refer her to a neurosurgeon.

It is important to treat the reason of the pain, since chronic pain will stress the body and will lead to other health conditions related to chronic stress if it was not dealt with properly.

For pain management alot of medications can be used, for pain management please refer to your family doctor for options that will help in controlling the pain and reduce chronic inflammatory states such as NSAIDs.

Please feel free to ask me any further question.

Kind regards,
Dr. Nazzal
