Question: Suddenly had stomach cramping, cold sweats then diarhea. Five hours later had some tea toast and applesauce. An hour later had a very small bowl movement but noticed blood on toilet paper and reddish coloration in toilet water. No more blood on toilet tissue.

Brief Answer:
To rule out dysentery and ulcers

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for your query.
I'm Dr. Shuba Hariprasad and will be answering your query today

Based on your symptoms I would like to rule out dysentery /bacterial Infection.

Would you clarify a few things for me, please?
* how long have you had these symptoms?
* do you have any fever or vomiting?
*have you had bloody stools before?
*do you smoke or consume alcohol?
*do you have any other medical issues or take any medications?
*how are your stools otherwise? Constipation? Any history of anal fissures or hemorrhoids?
*any history of gastric/duodenal ulcers?
*currently, how many bouts of diarrhea did you have? Was the blood bright red or dark?
*where exactly did your abdomen hurt?

Any blood in stools must be investigated, especially so if it recurs.

I recommend :
-a physician consult right away
-blood tests (complete blood count, clotting profile, kidney & liver function tests)
-urine analysis
-stool analysis
-an endoscopy /colonoscopy may be required to examine you gastrointestinal tract based on the clinical findings.

I urge you to seek medical attention right away. In the meantime, have a bland diet with plenty of fluids. Stay well hydrated.
If it is an Infection, then you will need antibiotics and proper rehydration therapy

If bleeding occurs again (more than a teaspoon - abt 5ml) or if you are not able to rehydrate enough or feel lethargic, go to the ER.

Hope this helps. Please get back to me with the above requested clarifications and let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.
Hope you feel better soon.
Wish you good health.
Regards,
Dr. Shuba Hariprasad
