Posted on Mon, 4 Jul 2016
Question: I am 75 years old. When hit, my arms do not bruise, but the skin tears and bleeds and looks awful for weeks. Is there something I can to do toughen my skin. I do not take blood thinners of any kind.

Brief Answer:
Considerations

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for sending the question.

What you are experiencing is a loss of elasticity of the skin which is a common skin change occurring with aging.

The best defense against skin breakdown or damage from minor trauma is to focus on good moisturizer therapy. I would recommend that you obtain a good over-the-counter daily moisturizing lotion. You might consider one which contains aloe vera.

If you moisturize your skin twice daily for several weeks this will help to build hydration and elasticity of your skin. This should help defend against skin breakdown in the future but is not a perfect solution.

Thank you again for sending your question. Please try the moisturizing therapy for a few weeks to see if this helps.

Sincerely,

Dr. Galamaga
