Suggest Remedies For Tightening In The Throat

default
Posted on Tue, 26 Jul 2016
Question: After exerting myself, walking for more than 5 minutes, raking, etc., the sides of my throat feel as though they are tightening. It can move, like pressure, into my jaw and close around to the front of my throat.

My Thyroid has been swollen along with lymphnodes. I have also been quite fatigued and generally feeling icky, low energy.

Brief Answer:
Thyroid

Detailed Answer:
Sorry to learn about your bothersome symptoms. When I see someone like you in my practice, I typically order the following blood tests in addition to a detailed physical examination:

CBC (Complete Blood Count, also known as Hemogram; includes Hemoglobin, WBC and Platelet counts)
Electrolytes (Sodium and Potassium in particular)
HbA1c (Glycosylated Hemoglobin = your last 3 months' glucose average). Also known by other names such as GlycoHemoglobin or Glycated Hemoglobin or A1c
Liver function tests (SGOT , SGPT, Albumin, Bilirubin, Alkaline Phosphatase)
Kidney function tests (BUN, Creatinine)
25 hydroxy Vitamin D levels (ideal range 40 to 60 ng/ml = 100 to 150 nmol/liter)
TSH (checks your thyroid)
Free T4 (this too checks your thyroid) And only if TSH is high, I recommend : Thyroid autoantibodies : Anti Thyroid Peroxidase (TPO) antibodies and Anti Thyroglobulin antibodies
If TSH is low, a XXXXXXX 123 (Radio Active Iodine) Uptake and Scan may be necessary
An Ultrasound examination of the thyroid and neck is necessary too
None of these tests require any fasting and can be done at any time of the day

Thank you Dr Topiwala,

My tests came back within normal range with the exception of:

Thyroid Antibodies - very high
Epstein Barr Virus - very high
Smooth Muscle Test - Liver Antibodies - very high
Heavy Metals - high

I will ask my doctor to order an ultrasound as soon as my medical insurance is effective August 1st.

Thank you again, I was worried it was my heart.

Brief Answer:
Follow up

Detailed Answer:
Well one cant be certain it is not the heart until a through in-person check-up has been performed. See your primary care provider at the soonest. An endocrinologist will be able to guide you further regarding the positive antibodies ie whether or not future testing of your thyroid function is necessary
