Suggest Remedies For Water Retention In The Ankles And Feet
Question: My 89 year old mother has severe water retention in her ankles and feet mainly due to Congestive Heart failure. She is on Lasix and this has helped and the swelling has gone back to almost normal but this time she developed several blisters in between her toes and another large blister (about the size of a quarter) by her ankle. I have never seen this before on her and did not know what is making this occur.

Leg swelling / edema can occur due to congestive heart failure. Diuretics such as Lasix (Furosemide) are the usual treatment. If Lasix alone isn't working then spironolactone can be combined with it along with another diuretic. A wound care specialist should be consulted to treat the blisters after examining them. . Elevating the legs, salt and fluid restriction and support stockings can help with subsiding of the leg swelling which may lead to healing of the blisters. Appropriate antibiotics can be prescribed especially if there is evidence of cellulitis.
