Question: My bilirubin test came back elevated at 1.6 but my liver enzymes were normal. I've been having a lot of stomach issues lately such as pain cramping constipation always followed by diarrhea and nausea. Could this all be related? Also I also drink wine a few nights a week could that be the cause of the elevated level?

Detailed Answer:
Hello.

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

I read carefully your query.

It is important to know if this value is total bilirubin or direct bilirubin.Normal values for total bilirubin are 0.3-1.9 mg/dl and for direct bilirubin 0-0.3 mg/dl.If it was direct bilirubin 1.6 mg/dl ,it is considered high and can indicate a problem.Considering the fact that liver enzymes are normal ,there is no liver damage,so the alcohol is not the cause for this.
Your symptoms of stomach pain ,nausea, vomiting, diarrhea can be related to high bilirubin level and can indicate a problem in the biliary tract like gallbladder problems, gallstones. In this case there is an obstruction in the biliary tract and bile is not secreted in intestines ,causing such symptoms. You may even notice that your stool has a pale color.
It is possible that your symptoms are not related to this.Other conditions like gastritis, acid reflux,IBS etc can be the cause of your symptoms.

I would suggest to discuss all this with your treating doctor.A detailed medical history and physical examination are necessary. An abdominal ultrasound is necessary to evaluate liver, gallbladder ,biliary ducts for the presence of stones or any obstruction.

Hope it helps.
Let me know if you have any question.I would be happy to help.

Kind regards,
