Suggest Remedy For Anxiety And Uneasiness While On Metoprolol

default
Posted on Thu, 16 Jun 2016
Question: I have been taking metoprolol 25 mg. A week back, I started Korean red ginseng 1 gm slice of root boiled in water daily. I am feeling uneasy in the mornings. Is ginseng neutralizing the medication of metoprolol? Should I stop ginseng or reduce its dosage.
Please help!

I started Korean red ginseng hoping that it will reduce my anxiety and stress

Medication that I have been taking for last 2 years:
Metoprolol: 25 mg (morning)
Escitalopram : 10 mg (night) Did not take for last 5 days
Alprazolam: only if I am very anxious or on the verge of panic attack

I started Korean red ginseng (1 gm slice of root boiled in water) daily since last 6 days. It seems it has increased my anxiety. Is it reducing the effect or metoprolol as I am feeling uneasy.

The purpose of starting Korean red ginseng was to reduce stress and anxiety. Should I reduce dosage or stop completely?

Brief Answer:
It seems to be escitalopram cesation.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing.

I am Dr.Muhammad Ahmad. I have read your question completely and willl try to help with your concern.

You started ginseng 6 days back and you stopped taking escitalopram almost at the same time.

In my opinion This problem you are having is not because of starting ginseng , its because of stopping escitalopram.

I would advise you to continue your escitalopram and hopefully you will get better in a week as the drug builds up again in your body.

You can continue gensing there shouldn't be any problem. I would advise you not to stop a medication without consulting your doctor.

I hope this answered your question, a

Accurate and Excellent diagnosis! After taking one dose of Escitalopram yesterday night, I am feeling much better. Thank you for this perfect advice!

So, as per your suggestion, there is no issue in continuing:
Metoprolol 25 mg (morning)
1 gm Korean red ginseng boiled in water (evening)
10 gm Escitalopram (night)

Are there any long term interactions between Ginseng and Escitalopram/Metoprolol? Will this combinations keep my stress and anxiety in control and prevent severe panic attacks that I have occasionally?

Many thanks for your help!
