Suggest Remedy For Blood In Phelgm
I have had blood in my spit for over 2 weeks now, it is only there when i wake up in the mornings, i will have a funny taste in my mouth which results in me having to spit, which then has streaks of blood in, after spitting 5/6 times it then goes until the next morning
I am a 30yr old male, ex smoker, otherwise in healthy condition, i have no cough or breathlessness, stomach or throat pain, no ulcers or dental problems etc
I did have flu about 8 weeks ago, and had a bad cough for 4 weeks, but ive been fine since, just a little nasal mucas etc, nothing out of the ordinary, my cough has all but gone
Please get back to me as i'm worried the blood means it's something serious, Thank you.
May be thick phlegm separation is the cause.
Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
I can understand the plight one goes through if there is blood in the spit.
With the history of flu 8 weeks ago and the bad cough for 4 weeks, the chances the blood in spit are due to post-viral congestion which has not yet been fully recovered from.
The cause in most of the patients with similar history is as follows:
The throat and the nasal air passages still are not fully back to normal. There is congestion and when one sleeps the slow collection and inspissation ( process in which the water content in the sputum is reduced to cause the phlegm thicker and more sticky to the mucosa) overnight makes it stuck to the underlying mucosa. When one tries to clear this in the morning very small blood vessels underneath are tore to give the blood in the spit. These blood vessels get sealed immediately to give no blood throughout the later part of the day.
So you get this problem only in the morning after waking up. Funny taste in mouth is usually due to the same phlegm or the blood.
Yet to be on the safer side, it is better to get yourself examined from an ENT Surgeon to get ENT endoscopy of the nose, pharynx and oral cavity to see or rule out any focus of bleeding, get the correct diagnosis and treatment.
Additional X-ray of the chest and sinuses (preferably CT scan of the sinuses) help to get additional information and plan for treatment.
Rare causes of such blood streak appearing can be a mass in the nose or pharynx.
I hope this answer helps you to get the proper diagnosis and treatment.
