Suggest Remedy For Degenerative Spine Conditions

Question: I have chronically tight muscles in my neck, back, and legs. My previous PT, my chiropractor and massage therapist tells me that my muscles are hard. My massage therapist states that she cannot get the skin to move away from the muscle. I don't have tremors or turning of the neck. I do have worsening of my cervical spine such as dessication, osteophytes, bulging disc. I do stretches and no change. Could there be a muscular reason behind it.

Brief Answer:
Degenative spine, not muscular reason behind your symptoms.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for posting your query here at HCM.

I have read your question and understand your concerns.

I have read your previous queries too.

There is no muscular reason behind your symptoms, the reason is degenative changes of the cervical spine and or your body and neck, because of the localization of the muscles problems.

Best way to improve your condition is physical therapy with the aim of strengthening and stretching cervical muscles and reducing joints loading accompanied by drugs such NSAID, muscle relaxers ( Tiocolchicoside ) antineuralgic drugs ( Gabapentin ).

If these measures fail to improve your symptoms, epidural injections of steroids could be used as next step.

All these issues should be discussed with your treating Doctor.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care.

I have had tight muscles several years prior to have neck issues. I have done physical therapy multiple times, motrin, Celebrex, gabepentian, and the exercises but it still does not relax the muscles.

Brief Answer:
Baclofen can be used.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back.

In this case, I think you should start treatment with baclofen (3x10 mg/day) for one month, if no satisfactory improvement, spinal injections of steroids and antineuralgic drugs should be tried.

Since these are prescription drugs, you should discuss with your primary care Doctor about their use.

Hope I helped you. Take care.

I have done robaxin, and now I am doing flexiril at night again. Why would my neck keep getting worse. I have been starting to get occasional numbness in my feet and in my shoulder blade. What exactly does encroachment mean on cord.

Brief Answer:
Stability of the cervical spine should be assessed.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for being on follow up.

Since your symptoms are worsening, there is need to evaluate the stability/instability of your cervical column as well.

This condition ( probable listhesis ) is tested/evaluated by having done dynamic x-rays of your cervical spine ( flexed, extended and neutral position ).

Encroachment on cord mean there is damage of the spinal cord by mass effect.
If you could upload some of MRI images I could have a better understanding of your condition.

If no instability found after x-rays, you should consider epidural injections.

As always, these tests and treatment possibilities should be discussed with your treating Doctor.

Hope I helped you.

Take care.
