Question: My mother is at her limit and at a loss of what to do next....she's 59 never smoked taken drugs nor does she drink. She's lives a very active life and takes no scripts. Shes 5.0 and 1o5 pounds. She has minor arthritis had 3 normal deliveries but had a hysterectomy at 28 and never took any type of hormone replacement therapy she doesn't take calcium or any vitamins. She has been complaining for over a year of severe weakness in her body mainly her legs as if they are going to give out on her. She has been given the clear of having fibromyalgia, ALS, MS, tumors, nerve damage that can be detected and any other neurological disorder by a nuero doc here in Grand Rapids mi. Her bp and chol and all labs are perfect with the exception shes considered hypoglycemic....however she doesn't follow a diet like she should. She also refuses to take any serotonin type of scripts. Due to her family history of depression and mental disorders it scares her. She's had mri's cat scans you name it and nothing. She's at the point where she won't talk to us anymore and she's very depressed because she is weak and in pain mainly in her legs. I don't know what else to do! I think she has chronic fatigue syndrome. Her last bone density scan was also normal although it's been about 4 years since her last. What can she possibly do next?

Need more details

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for asking.
I am Dr. Prakash HM and I will be answering your query.
Based on your query, my opinion is as follows:

1. Muscle weakness in the legs specifically could be due to muscle weakness, neural cause or vascular cause.

I need to know:
1. Does she have any pain along with weakness
2. Does the weakness start after she starts walking or its always there?
3. Has any doppler test been done for the legs or any vit B12 assay.
4. What's her hemoglobin levels.
5. Why is she hypoglycemic? How is her diet.?
6. Is lumbar spine evaluated?
7. Any pins and needles sensation or loss of sensation?

If all these are negative, then we can think of chronic fatigue syndrome.

Do get back with details. Possibly I can be more useful.
