Suggest Remedy For Displaced Fracture

Question: Hi,

I fractured my ankle just under 6 weeks ago, spent 1 week in a (stub?) cast which was replaced with a walking boot a week later on my first fracture clinic appointment. I had my 2nd fracture clinic appointment yesterday, the consultant stated that the ankle was "healing" and I should start to wean myself off the boot and try walking with a ankle support instead.

My boyfriend and I are worried as the 2nd x-ray looks (to us, obviously we have no idea really about fractures) worse than the first, i.e. the bone looks more out of place and a bigger gap in the fracture. (I will attach pictures of two x-rays when I can). With 4 weeks until my next appointment I am worried that I a) might be doing ore harm by trying to walk on it without the boot b) Go another 4 weeks down to road to recovery when things aren't quite set right.

I should point out that I can now put weight on the ankle and walk on it without any pain.

What do you guys think? XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
It get displaced now

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have studied your both x rays and I think that there is change in position of fracture. I do not think that this is acceptable. I would like you to suggest you to avoid putting any weight on this fracture. As this can further displace.
And if there is any more displacement then you will need a surgery to fix this fracture. In my practice I fix this with a temporary wire. This can be removed after 6 weeks.
In young patient like you ankle has to be in perfect position as whole weight of body comes on this joint. I would suggest you to meet with your doctor and discuss these points.
I hope this answer will be useful for you. let me know if there is any other followup questions. thanks
