Suggest Remedy For Frequent Bowel Movements In A Dementia Patient
Question: Hi, my 98 year old mother has been classed as having mild dementia, and is cared for at home by the family. As well as having the usual confusion associated with the condition she has developed an almost constant urge to try and have a bowel movement. This can lead to up to 15 toilet visits a day of which only 1 or 2 are ever bowel movements. Is it possible to stop the almost constant toilet visits ?
Brief Answer:
Stool softeners, Prune juice.
Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for using HCM.
I have read your question and understand your concerns.
Bowel movement problems in people dealing with Alzheimer's are improved by use of stool softeners that help emptying more easily the bowel ( such dulcolax ) and regular use of Prune juice.
It is also important to educate the patient about the time needed for a bowel movement ( normal time for a bowel movement is 9 minutes ).
Hope you found the answer helpful.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
