Suggest Remedy For Heart Palpitations And Stiffness On Chest

Posted on Tue, 3 Mar 2015
Question: I have been having heart palpitations at a variety of times; night time most frequently but also in the day time. I feel almost a stiffness in my chest area/neck but is not painful just as if something is weighing down on it. I will wake up in the middle of the night with my heart racing, at first I thought it was anxiety but there were not thoughts triggering this to happen. I have had anxiety before and can normally relax myself in these situations, but this seems a bit different. I would like to figure out what is going on, I did make an appointment to see a physician but it is not for another week....I am a 29 year old female. I have also been having periods every other month which isn't normal for me. I read somewhere that this could be a thyroid issue. What could be causing this?

Detailed Answer:
My brief answer ..
You may need thyroid profile and ECG test to be done.

Detailed answer...
Tough most common cause of palpitation in girls is anxiety and stress.Since you are confident about the anxiety factor so other causes can be hyperthroidism, sinus tachycardia (heart problem) or side effects of some medicines .
I would like to know the names of medicines ,if you are taking any,so I can help conclude the cause.
To rule out Sinus tachycardia or any change in pulse and heart rate ,you may get an ECG done and discuss further with your doctor.

Since you are also having menstural problems ,which can also be associated with thyroid gland disfunction. So better you get thyroid profile done .As palpitation and menstural problem and even anxiety all symptoms can be associated with increased T3.and T4 (thyroid hormones).Which is treatable .The best approach depends on your age, physical condition and the severity of your disorder. The treatment options can be 1.Radioactive iodine.
2.antithyroid medications
3.beta blockers (for palpitation)
4.Surgery(thyroidectomy)

I hope I have answerd your Question. And you may ask further ,I will be happy to help.
Wish you best of health.
Regards,
Dr.Maheshwari
